From Obscurity to the Mayor's Office: A Photographer's Unique Perspective
Imagine witnessing a meteoric rise, a journey from relative anonymity to the very pinnacle of power. That's precisely the story photographer Kara McCurdy documented, capturing the extraordinary ascent of Zohran Mamdani. Starting his political journey in 2020, Mamdani was a little-known figure. Fast forward to the dawn of 2026, and he's poised to be sworn in as the mayor of New York City, a role often dubbed the second-toughest job in the United States. McCurdy's lens chronicled this incredible transformation, providing a unique visual narrative of Mamdani's path to power.
Ali Rogin, a correspondent for the PBS News Hour and PBS News Weekend, had the opportunity to speak with McCurdy about her experience. Rogin's reporting spans a variety of critical topics, including international affairs, healthcare, and arts and culture. Her work has earned her a Peabody Award in 2021 for her contributions to the News Hour's series on the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. She's also a two-time recipient of the Edward R. Murrow Award from the Radio Television Digital News Association and has been part of several Emmy-nominated teams. These include her coverage of the fall of ISIS in 2020, the Las Vegas mass shooting in 2017, the inauguration of President Barack Obama in 2014, and the 2010 midterm elections.
