Anwar Ibrahim, Malaysia's Prime Minister, has revealed a significant financial achievement. The government has reportedly saved approximately RM1 billion by adopting generic drugs over expensive originator medicines. This shift in procurement strategy is a strategic move away from the outdated practice of prioritizing costly medications from the US and Europe. Anwar emphasizes that Malaysia could have saved tens of billions of ringgit by opting for more affordable alternatives from countries like India, Turkey, Brazil, and China, which offer the same quality at a fraction of the cost. This initiative is part of a broader effort to address the country's public health infrastructure challenges, including the recent completion of the Seberang Jaya hospital building, which took longer than expected. The health minister, Dzulkefly Ahmad, supports this policy, assuring the public that generic drugs are safe and effective. He highlights the financial benefits, stating that the government has already saved over RM900 million in the last two years, with the potential for further savings. The government is also addressing delays in public health projects, with Dzulkefly and the works minister reviewing and accelerating these initiatives to ensure timely completion.
