Hiking Adventures: A Tale of Beer, Burgers, and Rattlesnakes
In the world of hiking, motivation comes in various forms, and for me, the promise of a cold beer and a juicy burger is hard to beat. This story begins with a simple yet powerful incentive—a well-deserved treat at the Devil's Backbone, a campground and brewery nestled just off the trail.
The Quest for a Hitchhike
Hiking down the trail with eager anticipation, we embarked on a journey that would test our resolve. The morning started with a challenging climb up Three Ridges Mountain, followed by a descent that led us to a crucial road crossing. Here, the real adventure began as we attempted to hitchhike, a task that often comes with more rejections than success stories. But with the promise of beer and burgers, we were determined to persevere.
As we stood on the side of the road, a kind couple offered us a ride, and it was then that I realized the extent of our hiker aroma. The fresh, clean interior of their car served as a stark contrast to our trail-worn selves. We apologized profusely, grateful for their understanding and the open windows.
The Expensive Resupply
Before reaching our destination, we made a pit stop at a gas station for a resupply. A word of advice: never shop on an empty stomach! We grabbed snacks with abandon, and the total cost left us both in shock and laughter. It's a hiker's dilemma—the hunger drives us to overspend, but the satisfaction is worth every penny.
Trail Friends and Rattlesnakes
As we continued our journey, we crossed paths with fellow hikers, a friendly reminder of the community we're part of. We even had the chance to catch up with a trail friend, Goat, who joined us for a much-needed lunch at the brewery. But amidst the camaraderie, nature reminded us of its presence in the form of a rattlesnake, nearly causing a mishap on the trail. It's a testament to the beauty and dangers that hikers must navigate.
The Search for Comforts
Our quest for a comfortable night's rest led us to a dispersed campsite on Humpback Mountain, where the lack of a privy presented a challenge. The great outdoors can be unforgiving, and sometimes, even the simplest of comforts become a luxury. After a close call, we managed to set up camp and were rewarded with a breathtaking sunset, a moment of serenity that made the struggles of the day worthwhile.
Town Day and Trail Days
The following day, we hiked into Waynesboro, VA, a town day filled with anticipation. The promise of hot showers, clean laundry, and a cozy bed fueled our steps. It's fascinating how our perspective shifts when we've been on the trail for a while; simple amenities become the ultimate rewards. We even had the pleasure of meeting up with fellow hikers Nightcrawler and Goat, sharing stories and camaraderie.
As we prepared for AT Trail Days, I couldn't help but reflect on the unique experiences hiking offers. From the thrill of hitchhiking to the beauty of sunsets, and the constant surprises along the way, it's a journey that challenges and inspires. Personally, I find these adventures to be a reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the beauty that awaits those who dare to explore.
