McGregor's concerns extend beyond the immediate dispute, as she worries about the environmental impact of the transformation, particularly on the water table and the residents of Christina Lake.
Sheldon Bennett, CEO of DMG Blockchain Solutions, acknowledges the environmental concerns but argues that the company's plan to retrofit the Bitcoin mine into a data center will utilize modern, water-sparing technology. Bennett claims the data center will employ a closed-loop system, using a water and glycol mix for cooling, which will be recycled and replaced after approximately six years. However, McGregor remains skeptical, pointing out that the building has already been significantly altered without proper permits, creating a 'Swiss cheese' structure.
The regional district has taken action, placing a notice on the property's title to inform future buyers of the contravened regulations. They are also pursuing additional enforcement options, emphasizing that the company is still in violation of regional guidelines. B.C.'s Minister of Energy and Climate Solutions, Adrian Dix, acknowledges these concerns and highlights the province's efforts to regulate water and electricity usage. Bill 31, recently passed in B.C., limits electricity allocation for AI and data centers and bans further bitcoin mining.
